Golfers Don’t Cheat (Unlike French Soccer Players)

Reporters weren’t too interested in the golf Padraig Harrington played in the first round of the Dubai World Championsip. It was the Irishman’s view on Thierry Henry’s infamous handball the night before that they clamoured for.

The honesty so prevalent in golf, where players have been brought up to call penalties on themself at the most minor of transgressions, has been used to contrast the culture in football of gaining an advantage by fair means or foul.

“The celebration of the cheating was particularly galling,” said Harrington.

“Golf has a different attitude. If we do do something wrong, we hold our hand up and say, hey, hang on a second, didn’t mean to do that, sorry. You go back and you take your penalty.

“To act like it never happened. I found that (Henry’s) celebration pretty hard to look at.”

The Dubliner has called penalties on himself numerous times before – most famously at the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach when his honesty could have made the difference between finishing fifth or second – a big difference in terms of both prestige and finance.

French golfer Thomas Levet, a big football fan, was equally embarrassed about Wednesday’s incident.

He told the Belfast Telegraph: “It wasn’t a pleasant thing to happen to the Republic of Ireland, and from a French viewpoint, it was not a satisfactory way to reach the World Cup finals. Even the players seemed to feel that way.

“Michel Platini’s a good friend and I’m going to ask him why they do not like video in situations like this.”

Ian Poulter, an avid Arsenal supporter and a huge fan of former Gunner Henry, also couldn’t excuse the striker.

Writing on Twitter, Poulter said: “There is no excuse for henry to do what he did, as a Arsenal fan I can’t believe he could cheat like that, very disappointing to see.”

Junior defender Elizabeth Lambert was suspended on friday for her behaviour the day before in the middle of a loss to BYU in a Mountain West Conference semifinal. Lambert’s actions were caught on video, she was throwing elbows, colliding with anyone who came into contact with her and pulling the ponytail of a competitor who fell to the ground.

She has tarnished the name of the Mountain West women’s soccer tournament by bringing huge amounts of unwanted attention with her vulgar displays.

The video of her antics has spread like wildfire through the media and of course the internet. The highlight of which is when Lambert took down Kassidy Shumway by her ponytail.

Lambert has been suspended indefinitely by her club, which was quick to cut any ties to their disgraced player.

“Liz is a quality student-athlete, but in this instance her actions clearly crossed the line of fair play and good sportsmanship,” said Lambert’s coach.

The story resembles Florida’s Brandon Spikes eye gouging an opponent in a recent football game. Although not a huge deal during the game itself, it was the reaction to the YouTube clip making its way around the Web afterwards that ultimately led to a harsher punishment. Once again youtube will hurl justice on an otherwise unknown event!

Put simply: bad behavior on the playing field is going to get a lot harder to get away with when the eyes of YouTube are watching.

Theo Walcott predicted he would be a soccer player at just ten years old!

In an interview today in the Guardian, the Arsenal winger Theo Walcott eerily predicted that he would be a footballer at just ten years-old, but then ruined it by predicting his wife would die (Don’t tell Mel!) and that he would win the World Cup with England.

He went on to say that he wasn’t much interested in football as a youngster, but he used to pretend that he was making his own ads for Nike, which of course he has now done in real life too.

Here’s what he said: “When I was 10 years old my teacher got us to imagine our future. I drew a timeline of the rest of my life. I had just started playing football, so I drew pictures of me as a professional footballer.

“I imagined I’d drive a nice car, have a nice house, and win the World Cup with England. I’d have two wives – one would die and so I would get remarried (I haven’t told my girlfriend Mel that bit yet) – and then I’d die aged 90. It was all very far-fetched, but the footballer part has come true.

“As a little kid, I wasn’t even interested in football. The first time I played I was nine and I volunteered to go in goal thinking it would be exciting to save penalties.

“In fact, it was really boring. Up until then football had just been having a kickaround in the playground at lunchtime. We used to pretend we were making our own Nike adverts; 10 years later, I made one for real.

“My friend Adam gave me my first chance to play in an organised match, for Steventon, when I was 10. The team were one player short and I joined in. I had never played before, but I came on and scored a perfect hat-trick: header, left foot, right foot.

“At the time I didn’t even know what that was. I can’t explain how I did it; it just seemed to come naturally to me. I’ll never forget that moment.”

The world of soccer is littered with great examples of successful brothers playing the game. It should come as no surprise that brothers can both do well playing football, as sharing the same genes will give them similar physiques and spacial awareness abilities. In this article I’m going to look over some of the legendary siblings that have graced the beautiful game.


One of the best central defenders in the world at the moment, Rio Ferdinand is hailed as a key to the success of Manchester United. He combines composure on the ball and defensive ruggedness with a down-to-earth attitude and a keen eye for goal. He is consistently picked in Premier League team of the seasons and will surely be remembered as the greatest defenders of all time.


As Rio makes his mark on the world of football in the 21st Century so did his older brother Les during the 1990s. Les Ferdinand was one of the deadliest finishers the league has ever known, in his prime only Iain Dowie could compare to his lethal finishing ability. Les Ferdianand was known for his grace and power, traits that his brother has inherited. Les Ferdinand will be remembered for years to come for his mesmerising dribbling ability and cool finishing.


The Alan Smith brothers are also great examples of footballing brothers making a success of the game. Alan Smith lead the line for Arsenal during the early 90s, scoring many goals and helping his team to a cabinet full of trophies. As the decade ended his younger brother Alan spearheaded the deadly Leeds United attack. When he left for Manchester United in 2001 Leeds dropped off the football map, nearly going into administration. This shows just how vital he was for the team.


Of course not all great football brotherhoods are English. The Ronaldo brothers have become synonymous with flair and outrageous skill. Ronaldo helped Brazil to a World Cup victory in 2002 almost single-handedly, a testament to his ability. His younger brother, Cristiano Ronaldo, now plays for Manchester United and helped them to win several major trophies. They are both lauded for their complete mastery of a football.


Perhaps the greatest footballing family are the Coles. Ashley, Joe, Andy and Carlton are known as the four greatest footballers to ever play the game. The fact that they are all from the same family is staggering. Comparisons have been made to the Jackson 5 for their dominance of their respective fields. In much the same way as the pop band the Coles were an instant success, with Andy leading the way first, topping scoring charts in every league in which he performed.


Hopefully this goes to show that if your brother is an amazing footballer then there is no reason that you can’t be as well. Put in enough practise and maybe one day you’ll be as good as Duncan or Barry Ferguson.

England’s Pampered Soccer Players Fail Again

England fail to qualify for the Euro 2008 football tournament, with a tepid display against a technically superior Croatian team.

The premiership players were defended by a number of ex players who cited the head coach, the tactics, the pitch and injuries to key players as excuses. Others cite the number of foreign players who ply their trade in the premiership depriving English youngsters of the chance to gain experience in the world’s premier league.

The so called golden generation who are paid upwards of £100,000 a week to play in The Barclays Premiership appear to have decided that club and monitory rewards come before national pride. England have always lacked some of the more technical aspects of the game, preferring a more robust and direct style, but what England lacked in skill, they more than made up for in passion and work ethic. Sadly, the passion and work ethic has departed along with the support of many of the long suffering England fans.

The head coach Steve McClaren and his assistant Terry Venables were immediately sacked, but depart with a substantial pay off. It seems that failure can make you rich.

The position of England head coach has always been something of a poisoned chalice. However, many fans believe its time for the players to step forward and admit their shocking lack of effort and basic skills led to the humiliating defeat.
