If your child is moving for at least thirty minutes a day, it will prevent the problems that children are growing up to have with their health. By having something where the child is being encouraged to move around and is doing it with their peers, it will be easier to build a foundation for good physical health through activity.


If you are interested in your child staying healthy, then making sure that they play sports will give you the ability to become substantial in what they need for their physical health. It will first prevent complications in their current health, beginning with obesity, and going into more severe problems. Making sure that they stay physically healthy will also stay with them for the rest of their lives, making sure that they understand the importance of moving throughout the day.

Playing soccer as a beginner can seem daunting, but in fact it is simple to pick up. The game is played by eleven players on each team on a field that, while varying in size, is generally around 115 yards by 75 yards. With this in mind, remember a few core rules: only goalkeepers can touch the ball with their hands; when tackling for the ball, if you miss and hit the player, it’s a foul; a foul in the defender’s goal area results in a penalty kick; and there are corner kicks, goal kicks, and throw-ins, depending on how and where the ball goes out of play.

To learn how to play soccer, then, involves three steps.

Step 1.

The first is to learn soccer’s rules: read the Laws of the Game, or at least glance through them. At just 50 large-type pages, this isn’t a huge task, and you’ll be surprised at some of the soccer laws in there.

Step 2.

The second step is much more enjoyable: sit back, relax, and watch a game! Whether it’s online, on TV, or – the best option – in the flesh, there’s nothing like getting into the thick of things by watching soccer being played. It doesn’t matter what level you watch from high school through to the World Cup as long as it’s played on a regulation field by eleven players a team with a referee: the basics are the same all throughout the world.

Step 3.

Then there’s the third step: find a local club, pull on your cleats, and step onto the pitch. Most teams have local beginners’ soccer clubs for just this, and you will almost certainly not be the only one who is still learning the game.

If you really want to become good at soccer, then practise alot. You can practise by yourself, or with a friend, but even just practising kicking a ball against a wall, or learning how to juggle a soccer ball will ensure that you improve your soccer skills, and will be on the way to becoming a good soccer player.

Soccer Uniform, Colors In Play

Nothing is more important for a soccer fan, than his team’s colors and badge. In the soccer uniform, the club’s badge is on the chest, placed close to the heart.

In the nineteenth century, soccer uniforms had long sleeved shirts and they used knickerbockers that covered the knees in place of the shorts used today, and long socks.

When television was black and white, the color of the soccer uniforms were very important, when one team played in light uniforms the other team had to play in dark. In this way, viewers could tell which team was which, and also the players were able to tell where their team mates were on the field. The biggest sporting event in the world is about to begin and most in the USA are uninformed about soccer. This article will provide a brief introduction to soccer, rules of the game, structure of the World Cup, odds-on-favorites and authentic underdogs that will participate in the FIFA World Cup.

Welcome to Soccer 101. As the FIFA World Cup, the most popular and fervently followed sporting event in the world approaches, many are anticipating that the world’s largest tournament will be successful in increasing the sport’s fan base. In the past, most people in the USA have had little to no knowledge or interest in this huge event. In recent years, there has been a shift in “American” thinking, and soccer is starting to become more popular. The event that clearly defines this sport, the World Cup, is to be held in Germany starting June 9th and will reach its climax on July the 9th with the crowning of a World Championship team.

The word “soccer” is actually only used in the United States and Great Britain, where it has its origins. The rest of the world simply calls it “football”. The term ‘soccer’ is actually an abbreviation derived from “Association Football”, an organization formed in London in 1863. Originally called the Football Association, it was formed to standardize the rules for the game. One of the early compelling rule changes established by this association was that the ball could not be carried, or touched by the hand, except by the goalie. At the time, many enthusiasts and players were leaning toward morphing the sport into something similar to rugby or American football. This caused a rift in the two schools of thought and the rugby oriented clubs departed from the association soon after. The organization then coined the name Association Football to make a distinction between the two sports. In 1889, the abbreviated form “socca” started to be used. Eventually, in 1895, the spelling was changed to “soccer.” The origin of soccer, according to historians, is not nearly as clearly defined as the origin of the name.

The earliest known game similar to soccer was played in China during the Ts’in Dynasty (255 BC-206 BC). A game played with an animal skin ball and thirty-foot high posts connecting a net to form a goal, “tsu chu”, as it was known, was used to train soldiers. It is also documented that it was played as a form of celebration for events surrounding royalty. In ancient Near-East countries such as Egypt, a version of the game was played as a form of fertility rites. The American Indians and the Eskimos also had versions of a game similar to soccer. One legend documents a contest between two villages in Alaska with goals set up ten miles apart in a game called aqsaqtuk.

A Native American legend depicts the game played on the beach with goals a mile apart and players wearing disguises. Trying to distinguish between teammates and opponents was a part of the strategy in this game called pasuckuakohowog. Legends surrounding the game that describe using a conquered enemy’s skull as the soccer ball are found as early as the fifth century in England.

Now that you know a little bit of history of soccer, here is a quick look at the basic rules:

No Hands allowed – Only the goalie can use his hands in defense of the goal. This doesn’t apply to throw-ins. FIFA defines the hand as “Any part of the body from the tips of the fingers to the shoulder”. The goalie also cannot use his hands if the ball is passed directly from his teammate.

Fouls – A player cannot hold, kick, trip, charge, jump at, strike, push, or spit at or on an opponent. Fouls are called at the umpires’ discretion, making distinctions between incidental and deliberate contact. These are frequently called when the shoulders, arms or hands are used in an offensive way toward an opponent.

Direct and Indirect Free Kicks – A direct kick is one by which you can score by kicking the ball directly into the goal. An indirect kick is one by which you cannot score with directly. It may, however, be assisted toward the goal by another player. A direct kick comes from a contact foul or “hand” infraction. All other fouls result in an indirect kick.

Throw-ins – When the ball goes out of bounds on the sidelines a throw-in is taken by the closest offensive player. In this instance, use of the hands is allowed. Both feet must be on the ground and the ball is thrown in with both hands over the head.

Goal Kicks / Corner Kicks – Corner kicks or goal kicks are taken when the ball leaves the field across the end-line. If the offensive team was the last to touch the ball, it is a turnover and a goal kick is taken. If the defensive team was the last to touch the ball, a corner kick is taken.

Yellow and Red Cards – A yellow card is given as a warning, a red card is an ejection of a player. Two yellow cards equal one red card. If a player is given two successive yellow cards or a red card, they must leave the game and the team plays a man short.

Two-touch Rule – No player can touch the ball twice successively when putting the ball into play. This rule applies to throw-ins as well. A player cannot throw in and then kick the ball.

Penalty Kick – As a direct-kick foul, a penalty kick results from a contact infraction or hand foul by the defending team within the penalty box area. The kick is taken from the penalty box arc, which is 12 yards in front of the goal. All offensive players must be outside of the penalty box when the kick is struck. The goalie must have both feet planted at the goal line until the ball is struck.

Offside – If a player is closer to the opponents goal than to the ball or ahead of the ball with no defender between him and the goal, offside is called only if that player is involved in some type of offense activity as determined by the referee. This doesn’t apply to a goal kick, corner kick, or throw-in. It also doesn’t apply to a player on his “own half” of the field. You can’t be offside if you are standing on your half of the field. Also, the offside rule applies only when the ball is kicked, not when the player receives the ball.

Even when viewed in brief, the “Laws of the Game” are not simple. They can be confusing and difficult to understand. The FIFA World Cup has held 17 tournaments. Oddly enough, there have been only seven different nations that have won the championship. Spanning the entire history of the tournament, here are the winners: Brazil 5, Italy 3, Germany 3, Argentina 2, Uruguay 2, England 1 and France 1. Amazingly, six of these wins at the World Cup were by the host country. This would indicate that the host nation has a distinct advantage. There have been some notable upsets along the way however. The underdog USA team of 1950 defeated a highly touted English team. North Korea beat Italy in 1966 and Cameroon won over Argentina, a super power in the sport, in 1990. If you are looking to lay down a bet on the World Cup, historical and tournament structural facts are important to consider.

The structure of the tournament can be one of the things to look closely at when trying to decide who is the favorite. For 2006, Brazil and Japan, who are equally matched, are in the same pool. That makes it tough to predict who will survive that grouping. Head-to-head match-ups are not the only thing to consider. Fatigue comes into play when evenly talented opponents meet in an early round. So you have to consider that even if Brazil is victorious early on, will they still have the stamina to go the distance? There is also some luck involved in the structure of the final groupings. The top 8 teams are separated as #1 seeds for groups A through H. Germany and Brazil get their free pass as top seeds because they are respectively the host nation and the previous champion. The remaining clubs are simply drawn at random from a bowl.

The pools for the World Cup have been chosen and their seeding in descending order looks like this:

Group A; Germany, Costa Rica, Poland, Ecuador

Group B; England, Paraguay, Trinidad-Tobago, Sweden

Group C; Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia-Montenegro, Netherlands

Group D; Mexico, Iran, Angola, Portugal

Group E; Italy, Ghana, United States, Czech Republic

Group F; Brazil, Croatia, Australia, Japan

Group G; France, Switzerland, South Korea, Togo

Group H; Spain, Ukraine, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia

Group A: Germany is a very tough opponent, and they are on their home field, which makes them scary. However, Poland has a legitimate shot at making the finals. Group B: It is important to note that Sweden has not lost to England in 37 years. Group E: The Italians are a good team but overall this group is too evenly matched to call. The United States has as much a chance as anyone in this division. Group C: The two toughest powerhouse teams in one single group are Argentina and the Netherlands. One of these two will no doubt emerge victorious.

The Underdogs: Trinidad-Tobago will pay big (~1000/1 to win), but can they make it past the first round? Portugal (~22/1), Sweden and Mexico (~40/1) and the Ukraine (~50/1) will also provide a big payoff if they win.

Each year millions of Americans play organized soccer on teams across the country, and each of those teams identifies itself while symbolizing their team unity by wearing a soccer uniform. If you are interesting in joining a soccer team, or if you are an adult who is organizing a team, then selecting a soccer uniform is a great place to start. However, you should know that there is more to a soccer uniform than simply picking out a jersey.

There are several components in selecting a soccer uniform. Selecting a jersey, and jersey color, is one of them. Naturally, choosing a color is a subjective exercise, and personal tastes certainly come into play. Other factors might be the team name, or colors that represent the town or school with which your team is affiliated. Soccer jerseys not only come in varied colors, but in different materials and fabrics as well.

The Inventors Of Modern Soccer – English Soccer History

English Soccer History – Early Days

It’s hard to determine exactly how soccer became so popular in England in the 19th century, but the truth is that in the mid 19th century, almost every major town had a semi-professional soccer team. These teams were usually associations of workers from the same factory or institution or simply students at a local University.

Matches between those teams were played occasionally, with little to no prize, but only for competition’s sake. However, these matches were played without any rules or a referee and as soccer isn’t necessarily a sport that’s completely clean of violence, all it took was a harsh tackle or an argument about a particular rule to start a bloody fight between the two teams and their supporters.

But the year 1863 marked an extremely important chapter in English soccer history, as several soccer clubs from all over the country (prominently from London) met up in the English capital and set up a sort of “soccer constitution” called the Laws of the Game (a modified version of the original rules are still in effect today and are still called as such).

That was also the birth certificate of the Football Association, or simply FA that is still ruling over English soccer nowadays and had a tremendous importance throughout the history of soccer in England and the way it evolved.

English Soccer History – Important Milestones

With England being rightfully considered the inventors of modern soccer, one would expect them to be amongst the most successful national squads in the World. However, despite having some world class soccer players throughout time and despite always being favorites for the competitions they start in, the English national squad only achieved few important milestones throughout the entire soccer history in England.

History Of Soccer

If you want to understand the history of soccer, you have to admit that for some reason, humans have a natural urge to kick things. Whether it’s to release frustration, or simply for fun, we do this even without noticing.

And, you guessed, kicking a “ball” around (obviously, the balls were extremely rudimentary compared to what is used today) was considered a fun activity in many areas all around the globe, most of them developing at the same time, without interaction from one another.

In history of soccer the first written statement regarding the start of soccer comes from a Chinese military manual at around 300 BC, which describes a practice called “cuju” that involved the players kicking a leather ball through a hole in a silk cloth stretched between two poles. On the other side of the globe, in the Americas, the Aztecs were playing a similar sport, although some compare it to basketball more than soccer.

The purpose of the game was to kick the ball through a small stone circle that was placed high up on the arena’s walls, hence the relation to basketball.

Now I don’t know about you, but to me it sounds a lot more difficult to place a small leather ball exactly in the middle of a stone circle that’s well high above your head with your foot, than striking a modern “high-tech” ball in an 8 yard goal.

We usually think of the medieval era as a time when war was viewed as a necessity and a “job” rather than a calamity. Despite being quite a serious, “dark” period of time, somehow the medieval people managed to take some time for some sports, including soccer.

The forms of soccer played during this time were obviously incomparable to our current definition of the sport; hence they are usually classified as “mob soccer”.

While their dads were off at war, children would often grab a patched up leather ball, hit the nearby field and start a “war” on the field. The lack of rules often lead to fights and serious injuries and the sport was regarded as dangerous in many locations.

A clear example of this can be found in the London British Museum, where an engraving shows a group of men struggling to win a leather ball, with a second image showing a man with a broken arm. You do the math.

- Modern-day soccer

As mentioned above, although we don’t know when soccer was invented, we do know when it was organized as a sport under a clear set of rules. Being a popular practice in England, soccer was played chaotically and oftentimes it would lead to the same on and off-pitch battles similar to the ones occurring during medieval soccer matches. On each match, the two teams would agree on a particular set of rules, but with the lack of a referee arguments would often spark up.

In order to keep things in order, a few English clubs met in London on October 26, 1863 in order to create a set of well-defined and universal rules for the game.

The Football Association was born and although their set of rules did not apply to all clubs immediately, in a few decades, as soccer clubs switched from amateurism to professionalism, their laws and conduct restrictions became standard for everyone.

As you can see, there’s really no “right” way to answer the “When was soccer invented?” question and you’ll have your fair share of arguments at hand regardless of what period you believe was the spark that caused the wildfire that soccer is today.

And you’ll probably agree with me on this: it’s not really that important to know when soccer was invented, but rather acknowledge that we are lucky to be able to enjoy this wonderful sport at its best, as we can in modern times.

The only people allowed to use their hands during a soccer game are goalkeepers, who stopped the ball going in the net.

These people are usually called goalkeepers too, and the arbitrators are likely to issue penalties to any player who uses his arms and hands to move the ball towards the end of the field. The judges maintain a strong research on the action that takes place during a soccer game. They use hand signals to communicate their calls to referees and players involved in the game and on the sidelines.
