How to Find the Best Football Coaching Method

If you?ve always fancied yourself as the next Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho, maybe you?re already involved in playing or coaching football. Maybe you?re considering football as a good way of keeping fit, and want to know more about tactics and techniques. Perhaps coaching your child?s school team isn?t as easy as you thought, or maybe you just want to improve your own playing skills. Whatever the reason, there are many ways of learning how to play soccer, and becoming a better player or coach.

Summer soccer coaching courses in the UK are usually intensive and over a week or longer, and are often run by football clubs. Sometimes the course is staffed by former players, or players coming through the ranks and current players may make a guest appearance. Skills covered range from goalkeeping to shooting, and utilise soccer drills and other coaching methods. Soccer coaching courses can be expensive especially for a family with more than one football playing child and the best ones may not always be local.

Watching a lot of football, and hopefully picking up some skills from favourite players is useful, but not the same as learning how to play soccer from a professional qualified soccer coach. Imagine thinking you could learn to drive by watching a Grand Prix, or that you could learn to be a doctor by watching a TV medical drama.

Learning from books written by players or managers is another way of learning the necessary skills and techniques, but are not always practical on a soccer pitch. Books can be invaluable for the management side of football, and what better way for a new manager or coach to learn than from some of the most successful managers ever. It is difficult, however, for a team to sit round a book to learn a technique for example. Providing a book for each player could prove to be expensive, and may not be the best use of resources.

Using videos can be very effective to analyse all aspects of a match, including evaluating previous performances, identifying potential transfer targets, working out the best tactics and which techniques to work on. Videos can also be used to assess the strengths and weaknesses of opposing teams, and can even be more valuable that a scout?s report. Videos can be shown in a classroom environment so that the whole team can watch and learn. Being able to watch the video again and again, and watch it in slow motion can also be beneficial. The coach or individual players can watch the video independently, and see which areas could be improved.

Websites can combine video, text and images making it ideal for sports and academic learning. There are many online resources aimed at coaching football, and so finding the best one to meet your needs can be daunting. The level of the coach and/or players should be the main deciding factor. A site aimed at people who have no soccer coaching or playing experience will probably not be suitable for a professional club looking to prevent injuries or improve the mental performance of a player. All sorts of lessons can be found within these types of websites, including training plans for children of different ages, soccer drills, how to treat common injuries and much much more. As the player progresses, the techniques become more difficult, and the fitness and stamina will improve.

These types of soccer coaching websites provide a great deal of information and resources, and some sites are endorsed by a well known former player or manager. Learning how to play soccer from a professional coach or player, and being able to see techniques performed properly in real time by professionals, as well as explained in great detail by qualified coaches was previously only available via coaching courses. Now online soccer coaching is becoming popular, it can be invaluable, especially to younger players, who may learn better from watching than by reading. Football coaching websites may also offer help with working towards recognised professional football coaching qualifications As well as techniques and tactics, these websites may cover fitness training, recovering from injury, and sports psychology.

Whilst traditional methods of learning and coaching are still very popular, the rise of the soccer coaching website means that people all over the world now have access to the best coaches, football coaching methods and information, at any time. Professional clubs and players, as well as those at grass roots level can benefit from an internet based football academy. Just think, the club you play for or coach, could now be using the very same soccer coaching methods as the club you support!

Does Loyalty Exist in the Modern-Day Soccer Player?

Throughout the history of soccer there have been many examples of players showing admirable loyalty to their team and its supporters. Bobby Charlton, Paolo Maldini, Ryan Giggs, Tony Adams and Matt Le Tissier to name a few. Look at the list and you will notice a strong connection between the players, all were plying their trade for very successful clubs except for Le Tissier.

The exceptionally talented Southampton talisman could have taken his pick of teams during the 1990s and he deserved more England appearances than the records show. However, how many other soccer players are there that have talents like this but choose not to play for one of the top clubs? Not many, that is for sure.

With players like Chelsea’s John Terry reportedly earning 130,000 pounds a week it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to remain at the club for his entire career. He is Chelsea through and through and with the club chasing every title going each season it would seem foolish for him to move clubs. Supporters have a connection with their team and they hope and even expect the players to feel the same. Players like Giggs and Scholes would never have considered leaving Old Trafford and two Champions League Medals and ten Premier League titles justify those decisions. But what if they had started their careers at the unglamorous Bolton or Middlesbrough – would they still be there now? Unlikely.

Managers are under more pressure than ever to find the next big thing, as demonstrated by Arsene Wenger’s youth policy at Arsenal. He has raided some of Europe’s best teams with minimal funds and discovered talent of the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy, Nicklas Bendtner and the Carlos Vela. It has recently been announced that Arsenal have won the race to sign the highly-rated Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff City for approximately 5 million pounds.

Ramsey has played only 22 times for Cardiff and at the tender age of 17 is joining one of the best clubs in the world. A lot of pressure for a young player to live up to in one of the most competitive and demanding work environments. Is Ramsey disloyal to the club that nurtured his talents for leaving without achieving anything of great note or is this just another business and would any 17 year old in the world turn down the chance to work for a better company with a better salary and with much better prospects.

Soccer is not like any other business though. Take John Bostock of Tottenham Hotspur and previously of Crystal Palace as the prime example of the contemporary soccer player. As a seven year old, Bostock won a place at the Palace academy beating a whole host of other applicants. Nearly nine years later at the age of 15 years and 295 days he made his professional debut making him the youngest player in the club’s history. The Daily Mail named him ‘the boy Barcelona can’t buy’ as he looked set to snub many big-name suitors in favour of playing for his ‘boyhood club’. The season ends and Bostock decides to leave for Tottenham Hotspur to better his career and not for money at just 16 years old. Another prospect that feels he needs to leave his employers to further his career.

Should the supporters expect players to move clubs as often as Nicolas Anelka or are we owed 20 years of service for our lifetime of heartache failures? Fans must understand that soccer is even more of a business now that it ever was and money talks. Bostock played football at the age of seven because he enjoyed it and he found something that he excelled at. Kids don’t play football to make money, and it’s unfair to criticise players for wanting to reach the very top. It just seems a shame that along the way vision and dreams are becoming distorted by the lure of glamour and glory at such a young age.

Coaching Soccer Ball Control Drills

Whether trying out or playing for a youth soccer club, ball control is critical to every position on the soccer field. Since it is such an important soccer skill, youth soccer players should practice the fundamentals of ball control over and over at an early age through soccer drills customized to improve your dribbling. A few youth soccer ball control drills are listed below but you can find many more free soccer ball control drills online at websites like Weplay.com.

A team without effective ball control will have problems attacking, counterattacking, and ultimately, winning youth soccer games. Crisp passes, clean receiving, controlled dribbling, and moving the ball towards the opposing goal will allow teams to consistently set up scoring opportunities. Every soccer practice should involve ball control drills until it becomes second nature to young players.

Ball Control Drills for Youth Soccer Players

These ball control drills are not only effective for acquiring this mandatory skill, they will also add to the enjoyment of a soccer practice. The players will develop skills in dribbling, passing, receiving, positioning, and trapping.

Knockout Drill – The objective of this game is to develop the players’ ability to manipulate the ball and keep it under control. Have all players dribble their soccer balls while trying to knock other player’s balls outside of the grid.

Man-in-the-Middle (aka Pig-in-the-Middle) – Break the players up into teams of three with one soccer ball per team. One player starts out in the middle as a defensive player while the other two take up positions across from each other. The two offensive players must pass the ball back and forth without the defensive player gaining control of the ball. If the defensive player succeeds in trapping the soccer ball, they switch places with the player who passed it. The offensive skills acquired by youth soccer players are 1) making crisp, accurate passes 2) receiving the ball cleanly and in control. The defensive soccer player will learn to 1) position themselves effectively 2) become efficient at trapping the ball.

By establishing effective ball control in soccer games, you’ll be able to consistently put yourself into a position to win. The opposing team can’t score while you are in possession and is bound to make a mistake in trying to gain control. That’s when you strike.

By Trevor A. Sumner who works for Weplay.com, a youth soccer community dedicated to providing parents, coaches and athletes the tools and information to celebrate the love of the game. Weplay.com has one of the most comprehensive, free soccer drill libraries in its active soccer community.
